29 Trailer: Rathna Kumar Drops the Identity-Crisis Romance

The trailer for 29 is out, two days ahead of the film’s May 8 theatrical release. Rathna Kumar’s first directorial since Gulu Gulu sets up Sathya, a 29-year-old (Vidhu) stuck on the question of what he actually wants from his own life, and Viji, a 21-year-old UPSC aspirant (Preethi Asrani) whose certainty becomes the thing he keeps colliding with. The cut moves between the comedy of the early courtship and the friction of two ambitions that don’t quite line up, with Sean Roldan’s score doing most of the tonal lifting.

The supporting cast is Mahendran, Shehnaz Fathima, Avinash and Prem Kumar. Madhesh Manickam shoots, RS Sathish Kumar edits, and the producing chairs are split between Stone Bench Creations (Karthik Subbaraj, Kaarthikeyan Santhanam) and G Squad, the new Lokesh Kanagaraj banner whose first credit as producer rather than presenter this is. The film opens Friday, sandwiched between the late-April Dhanush release and Suriya’s Karuppu the following week.
