Sarkunam's Exam pits Dushara Vijayan against Aditi Balan in a seven-episode Prime Video thriller

A. Sarkunam returns with Exam, a seven-episode Prime Video series streaming May 15, and the trailer dropped in Chennai is the first time the director has worked at a length that matches the kind of story he has been chasing for a while. Dushara Vijayan plays Jhansi, an outsider trying to crack open a competitive-exam racket. Aditi Balan plays DSP Maramalli, the cop closing in on her. Abbas, returning to acting after a long break, plays Jhansi’s mentor Jayachandran.

The hook is procedural with personal stakes. The trailer cuts between Jhansi sliding deeper into a fraud network and Maramalli tightening the loop on her, and Sarkunam said the show grew out of friends who had spent years documenting irregularities in government-job entrance tests, some running coaching academies, others ending up in court fighting cases that eventually pushed them into law. He pitched the idea as both a thriller and a slow-burn portrait of middle-class anxiety around the one government posting that most families pin everything on, and Pushkar and Gayatri saw the long-form fit immediately.

For Wallwatcher Films, the producers’ company, this is the second collaboration with Sarkunam. Pushkar pointed back to Kalavani, the Sarkunam debut that turned a small budget into a hit in 2010, as the reason scale was never the variable here. They had been pitched feature scripts before; Sarkunam’s was the first they greenlit on a single read. The seven-episode structure was non-negotiable from his end, and the writers’ room brought in Andrews, who wrote Vadhandhi, to tighten the procedural beats.

Gayatri said casting was where the producers held the line hardest. Dushara, last seen in Sarpatta Parambarai, was the first call for Jhansi. Aditi Balan, whose only feature lead so far is Aruvi, had been on a pre-existing list and slotted in for Maramalli. Abbas reached out himself a year ago over a video call, asking if there was something worth coming back for. Jayachandran was that role.

Dushara called Jhansi the hardest character she has taken on, an ordinary woman who keeps having to make harder and harder choices, and credited Sarkunam with letting her stop second-guessing the moral arithmetic of those decisions on set. The action, choreographed by stunt master Dinesh, is the show’s other surprise: both leads spent weeks rehearsing fights with each other, and Aditi, whose work until now is mostly drama, said the bruises were earned at her own hands as much as Dushara’s.

The technical credits skew first-timers. The cinematographer and the art director are both on their debut here, a deliberate call by the producers who said the money went into shoot days rather than star fees. Sam CS scores the show. Sonal Kabi, who runs Prime Video’s regional marketing, was at the launch with the team.

Sarkunam was clear about what he wants the show to do. Government-job exams are the single biggest middle-class dream in Tamil Nadu, and the people who profit from rigging them are not abstract villains. The seven-episode runway is what the story needed to land that. Exam streams from May 15 on Prime Video in Tamil, with Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada dubs.
