Karuppu, the Suriya-led film directed by RJ Balaji, has set May 14 as its theatrical release date, with the team taking the audio reveal to Madurai over the weekend in a deliberate nod to the film’s central deity. Karuppusamy, the folk god of the Madurai region, is what the film is built around, and Suriya said so plainly from the stage. “In this film, I am not the hero. Karuppusamy is the hero.”

The reveal was held at Solamalai College of Engineering and ran with the energy of a temple festival rather than a film event, a comparison Suriya pushed himself. He spoke of Madurai’s Chithirai Thiruvizhaa, which draws lakhs every year, and said the Karuppu reveal felt like a continuation of that. The crowd at the venue was sized to match. The film is produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, with cinematography by GK Vishnu and music by Sai Abhyankkar.

Suriya plays a lawyer named Saravanan in Karuppu, his first collaboration with RJ Balaji as a director. Balaji, who co-wrote the film with four collaborators across thirty-two months of pre-production and shoot, used the platform to talk about the build. He said he had visited the Karuppusamy temple in Madurai two years ago and decided then that the audio launch had to happen in the city. “Throughout this film, Karuppusamy has held my hand and walked with me. I believe that is my biggest strength.”

Sai Abhyankkar’s first big Tamil film was set up by what he called a viral coincidence. He was on his way to meet RJ Balaji for the first time when news of his Suriya 45 signing broke on Twitter. “I got goosebumps. I cannot forget that moment ever.” His stage performance of the film’s first single, God Mode, opened the night. The composer said he had already watched a finished cut of the film and was confident the score was the strongest part of his work so far. RJ Balaji confirmed the Karuppu Kooda Va track was on the way and said the team was holding the release date off the posters to avoid a Censor Board flag.

The supporting cast at the launch included Indrans, Yogi Babu, Sshivada, Swasika, Anagha Maya Ravi and Natty Subramaniam, with Trisha Krishnan absent on the night. Lyrics on the film are by Vivek, who continues a Madurai-rooted line that runs back through Veyyon Silli on Soorarai Pottru. Production design is by Arun Venjaramoodu, who said the team had built a single prop aruva at eighty-five feet for one song, well past the typical scale.

RJ Balaji closed his speech the way the rest of the night was shaped, on the deity. “A king is coming for his throne.” Karuppu releases in theatres on May 14.
