Charulatha Mani's Thendralil Is Her First Outing as Composer
Charulatha Mani's first single as composer and lyricist, Thendralil, releases on Divo Warner. Vijay Sethupathi launches the romantic indie track.
Charulatha Mani’s first independent single, Thendralil, is out today, with Vijay Sethupathi releasing the track on Loopd by Divo and Warner Music South. The song is the singer’s first credit as composer and lyricist on her own work. Until now, her most-played track has been Anju Vanna Poove from AR Rahman’s Thug Life score. Thendralil takes a different shape, a melodic, breeze-led love song built around the ocean, beach and sand, where Charulatha’s carnatic-trained voice does the storytelling.
The single is carried by a music video shot on the coast, with Maalavika and Dhavan in the lead and Dharen Karthik directing. Charulatha makes a special appearance on screen as well, which is rare for her. She has stayed largely behind the microphone across her playback career. The arrangement leans on a mix she has been developing for years: sarangi, acoustic guitars, piano, pakhawaj, bass, synths and thavil, layered to keep the carnatic phrasing intact while letting the song travel into pop territory.

That bridging is the real story. Charulatha trained classically, holds a PhD from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and a postdoctoral fellowship in music with the University of Queensland, and has performed at Carnegie Hall as a Karnatik singer and ragam expert. Her playback hits include En Uchi Mandaila in Vettaikaran, Chillax in Velayudham, Theeye Theeye in Maatraan, Kannukul Pothivaipen in Thirumanam Ennum Nikkah, Titli in Chennai Express, and most recently Anju Vanna Poove. Thendralil is the first track where the composer-lyricist-singer credit is hers alone.

Vijay Sethupathi’s involvement is light-touch but pointed. He has launched a steady series of independent singles for artists who would otherwise struggle to get attention against film-music release calendars. Thendralil follows that pattern. The full music video is on YouTube and the audio is live across streaming platforms today.
